Sumona Chakravarty

Sumona Chakravarty’s practice reimagines how museums and public spaces can foster inclusive cultural dialogue. A graduate of Srishti School of Art, with a master’s from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, Chakravarty has been a fellow with ArtThink South Asia and the EU’s Global Cultural Leaders Programme. As Deputy Director of the museum vertical at DAG Kolkata, she leads initiatives to democratise art and expand public engagement. She is also the founder of Hamdasti, a Kolkata-based artist collective known for Chitpur Local, a long-term community art project in the historic Battola area. Her participatory approach brings together diverse communities to collaboratively explore local histories and intervene in public spaces.
In 2024, Chakravarty spearheaded Play Fair, a travelling interactive art festival that activated museum spaces like the Indian Museum and Victoria Memorial Hall with human-scale games and participatory installations. She also curated the fourth edition of The City as a Museum, which focused on the Tebhaga movement through immersive public art and archival materials. Her work continues to bridge art, education, and public history—bringing heritage into everyday experience and fostering collective imagination.
