U.S. President Joe Biden in a bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delaware.

The United States returned 297 antiquities to India as part of a new Cultural Property Agreement signed in July 2024. In a symbolic ceremony held in Delaware during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit, President Joe Biden officially handed over the artefacts, which date from 2000 BCE to 1900 CE. The collection, largely comprising terracotta pieces from eastern India as well as stone and copper sculptures and vases, marked a significant step in ongoing efforts to reclaim India’s cultural heritage.
