Subodh Kerkar left a career in medicine in 1990 to pursue art, eventually establishing the Museum of Goa (MOG) in 2015. Conceived as an accessible, community-oriented space, the museum brings together art, storytelling, and public programming to engage with Goa’s past, present, and future. Kerkar’s practice consistently bridges contemporary art with local histories, shaping MOG into a platform that invites diverse audiences into cultural dialogue. His vision for the museum stands out for its emphasis on experimentation with formats, infusing the space with creativity and welcoming contemporary art.
Marking its 10-year anniversary, 2025 became the museum’s most ambitious phase yet under Kerkar’s leadership. The flagship exhibition Festivals of Goa brought together over 90 artists and 150 works, exploring shared traditions and cultural coexistence through multimedia installations, photography, and sculpture. This expansive vision extended across the year’s programming, with festivals, film screenings, workshops, and talks drawing both local and international audiences. Initiatives such as Silver Fest Goa and the Goa in Film festival further cemented the museum’s position as a dynamic cultural hub. Looking ahead, Kerkar’s upcoming Beer Museum signals yet another expansion of his efforts to rethink what museums in India can be.
